Counseling and Psychotherapy

I used to think that personal change and growth resulted from a combination of insight and will power.  What makes sense to me today is that through accepting ourselves and others as human and then listening to the messages from our dreams, bodies, and intuition, we can transform without pressure and guilt.

For years as a child I was fascinated by the characters I came across in my reading.  I continue to find human beings infinitely complex and sweetly simple.  As a psychotherapist my intention is to support my clients as we untangle a problem, or grieve and wait for the return of hope.

A good connection between the therapist and client is very important to healing.  When I am sitting with someone who is discouraged or confused, I am aware that no matter how complicated or impossible things may seem to be, if we can gently, patiently encourage the sparks of life, satisfaction and passion may return.

In a First Session

I listen to you and let you know honestly if and how I think I can help.  I have training in a number of different modalities, but the mainstay of my sessions with clients is honest talk.  Sometimes the solutions to problems are in physical symptoms; our bodies know what we need and let us know, if we can figure out how to listen.  Other times solutions are suggested by dreams, or by sudden insights that occur as we talk.  By the end of the session you should have a sense of whether or not you want to continue.  We should have arrived at an understanding about what you want to get out of therapy and whether or not you think we can work together.
